Back To School Plumbing Tips

When it comes to the new school year, daily routines get kicked up a notch. From coordinating what television shows you’re watching to pick-ups and drop-offs, the beginning of school marks the start of an on-the-go lifestyle. And amid the hectic tasks of packing lunches, checking on homework, and grabbing masks before you head out, the last thing you need is a plumbing malfunction.

That’s why we here at Indiana Leak Detection are providing some back-to-school plumbing tips so you and your family don’t have to coordinate yet one more schedule—your repair schedule.

Here is how you avoid a major plumbing fiasco this season:

Communicate About Shower Times

Every morning seems to be a mad dash towards the door, as alarms are snoozed, and dogs need to be walked. Not to mention, your family needs to get ready all at once. And, when showers are taken in quick succession, your water heater is asked to accomplish a lot. This pressure can result in cold showers, as your water heater may not be able to perform at the rate in which you need it to. If you are consistently taking lukewarm showers: start off by staggering your shower schedules.

Have some of your family members bathe at night, and others shower in the morning. This will give your water heating appliance more time to replenish your hot water in between showers. However, when it comes down to it, you should not have to worry about calendaring one more thing. So, if your water heater is underperforming, it may be time to consider that your water heater is not the right water heater for you.

Depending on your hot water demand and your home size, you may need a new system. When a hot water heater is not properly sized for your home, your supply will never meet your need. If you have had cold water issues since your system installation, your water heater is not the correct size for your home. If your system has performed for you in the past, but has dropped off, it is likely you just need repairs—sediment build-up is the probable cause.

Always Use Your Bathroom Fan

Where there is frequent water use there is a chance of mold growth. Especially, when using hot water, as steam can cling to your walls. It is imperative that you use your bathroom fan when showering, as moisture increases over the duration of your shower. This can become increasingly problematic, as perpetual moisture build-up will lead to mold growth. Your bathroom fan will counteract this increase, and wick away moisture. Make sure your fan is in working order to prevent mold spores from compromising your air quality.

Schedule A Drain Cleaning Appointment

With more use comes more potential for drain clogs. And with soccer practice, cheer tryouts, and gymnastic classes back in session, you’re using your showers and baths with higher frequency. Hence, it is increasingly important to practice drain care.

When it comes to addressing existing clogs, it is important to resolve them in a professional manner. Using DIY, liquid drain cleaners will actually do more harm than good. When it comes to these solutions, they are extremely abrasive and highly toxic. This poses a threat to not only your piping, but also your health.

From mucus membrane harm, respiratory irritation, and potential skin burns, you don’t want to use these chemicals without severe consideration. Along with compromised indoor air quality, these solutions can eat away at your plumbing causing leaks to spring and further pipe deterioration.

Before you reach for chemical drain cleaners, schedule preventive drain cleaning or clog removal. You and your plumbing will be better off!

Reduce Your Water Heater Temperature

If you have young children, adjust your water heater accordingly, especially if they are beginning to bathe themselves. Water heater temperatures should be set to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, as anything above that could scald your child.
