PLUMBING GUIDE FOR A HEALTHY NEW YEAR

by | Feb 17, 2017

There is no time like the present to make sure that you and your family are embracing every opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle. Did you know that plumbing can play a part in your health? Similarly, you can make a big impact on the health of your plumbing by taking a few simple steps.

It’s all about being proactive with preventative maintenance and committing to a little DIY on a regular basis. Here are some ideas on how to make sure that your plumbing is in tip-top shape.

Drain Filtration & Hair Clogs

One of the most common causes of a clogged drain is the buildup of hair. This can cause drains to back up and potentially be useless. One way to remedy this problem is to use a drain filter. This simply fits overtop of the drain and catches hair (and other debris too for that matter) before it flows into the drain.

This contraption does require some ongoing maintenance to clean out but is a wise move for the health of your drains.

Clean Faucets

Depending on where you live, there is either a little or a lot of minerals flowing through your taps. The aerator (which is the mesh piece inside the faucet) catches these minerals. Over time, the aerator will get grungy and need to be cleaned out because it will interfere with water flow.

To do this, unscrew the faucet and pop the aerator out. Soak it in vinegar for a few minutes, which will loosen the minerals. You can easily scrub it clean after that. It’s recommended to repeat this monthly.

Water Safety

How often do you get your water tested? Unfortunately, sometimes undesirable things that can be harmful to your health (like lead or high levels of harmful bacteria) can seep into your water, posing a risk to your health.

If your water isn’t as pure as you’d like, consider installing water filtration systems. You have a number of options, depending on your needs and your desired outcome of the water.

Flush Your Water Heater

Want to keep your water heater healthy, therefore extending its lifespan? Get in the habit of flushing it once a year. Sediment gathers over time, which will make it hard for your system to operate efficiently. It can also eventually lead to corrosion and widespread damage.

Drain Cleaning to Remove Bacteria

Getting your drains clean is an excellent way to avoid clogs and buildup, but it is also an effective way to flush your system from bacteria. Food matter builds up over time and can create an unsanitary clog. This is especially a good idea if you cook a lot at home. An annual drain cleaning can help keep your pipes and your family’s health right on track.
